One of my biggest disappointments inadvertently led me to one of my lifelong passions.
As a young Oxford University archeology graduate student researching the ancient ruins of Majorca, Spain, I was forced to leave the country amid political unrest followed by the death of dictator Gen. Francisco Franco.
I abandoned my graduate work for a part-time job teaching archeology at a community college in northern Pennsylvania, hurling myself into the task, using slides from the Majorcan trip to get my students excited about the mysteries inherent in ancient sites all over the world.
As if taken from a script, one of my students raised her hand an insisted that she had seen rock slabs with mysterious markings in rural Pennsylvania that were similar to the stone structures and underground chamber in Spain. Though skeptical, my curiosity got the better of me so I agreed to take a look. When I saw that she was right, a lifelong passion for mysterious places was fueled.
Eventually, I created a formal research company whose mission was to search for lost America. That effort mushroomed and its success led to my first set of best selling book deals. Since then several of these books have been used for several television shows.
The discovery of that mysterious place in rural Pennsylvania led to my decades-long dual career in exploration and education. I’ve basically had two lives. Both have been driven by my desire as an insatiable learner and my need to create other insatiable learners. I became interested in students and how you can change a life by incorporating the thrill of discovery into everything you do.My education career was spent as a science teacher and a headmaster in public and private schools.
A few years ago I transformed my books into digital format and the results have been astonishing.
