The Fine Art of Becoming an Author
Initially rejected by every literary agent she approached, Debra Fine wrote and self published the first edition of her book, The Fine Art of Small Talk. Debra’s self published compact disc of the same title continues to be a bestseller at Kinko’s FedEx across the country. The mainstream publishing houses discovered Debra and her book in 2004 and a bidding war ensued landing a two-book deal with
Hyperion Books. Presently she enjoys the success of the now published edition of
The Fine Art of Small Talk (2005) and just released The Fine Art of The Big Talk
(2008). Take advantage of Debra’s experience and success to:
• Determine if self-publishing or the traditional route is for you.
• Understand what’s involved with self-publishing including text design, printing, bar codes and ISBNs, cover design, and distribution.
• Select book dimensions, color, paper quality, and price.
• Obtain nationwide or regional distribution.
• Develop a publicity campaign with little financial investment.
• Evaluate fulfillment houses.
• Make the most of Book Expo America in 2008.
• Manage the bidding process for printers.
• Establish the beginnings of a list of resources for self-publishing.
